Today I left Nairobi at 11:00 am and spent almost the entire day (aside for a lunch break) in the vehicle, getting driven to the Mpala Research Centre. The closest town to Mpala is Nanyuki, which is a 2-hour drive away from the station. Overall an enjoyable trip. I studied my birds, listened to music, and talked to my driver, Karanja. We made a mango stop along the way at a roadside fruit stand:
The mangos came pre-sliced, in a neat plastic bag so my hands didn't even get sticky:

Our lunch stop, the Springfield Butchery. ("Karibu Sana" means "Most Welcome.")
This was a very tasty, meaty lunch. Basically this server brought out a hunk of meat and sliced it up in front of Karanja and me on a wooden board:

A look into the kitchen:
I like this guy's shirt:
On our way into Mpala Research Centre (from now on I'll always refer to it as "MRC"), I spotted a group of elephants out my window. I was SO happy to be out of the city and in nature again!
The gate to the station:
My banda - the hut I'll be staying in for the next 1.5 months as I embark on my research. Cute, is it not?
Here's a look inside. I'm sharing the banda with three other young women who are awesome and a lot of fun to hang out with.
