Arusha Birding: Part II

Friday, 17 June 2011

Went birding to Lake Duluti again.  And, again, it was rainy and overcast.  Every other day it’s nice and sunny, but the day we decide to go birding always happens to be cold and rainy!  Stefan (a fellow bird researcher I met in Arusha) came along with Elvis, Leo and Furaha.  Here are some highlight sightings:

Black-headed Oriole – downward whistle  “phew”
RETZ’S HELMET SHRIKE – very pretty bird
Fiscal Shrike – sounds like diarrhea, dry farting call
Ring-necked Dove – “work harder, work harder, work harder” ; whup prrrrrr-pu, whup prrrr-pu
VILLAGE INDIGOBIRD
African Green Pigeon (8) – “tawheeta, tawheeta, etc.” whistled jumble
VIOLET-BACKED STARLING (75+)
RED-HEADED WEAVER

A pretty Sphingid moth we found:

Very Zen-like scene of two fishermen in the mist:

I found a dead snake on the road (flattened by car tires):

And a dead toad:

We returned to the restaurant we loved:

I ate Mtori.  It's a mashed plantain and meat soup.  Super filling and tasty!

The bunch of us:

I asked the chefs if I could take a picture.  They were thrilled and invited me into their kitchen, telling me to take photos of them cooking.  I appreciated their enthusiasm, for I really wanted to snap this shot.  This is the restaurant's only kitchen.  So small and yet out of it comes a great variety of food!

Ugali - an East African dish of maize flour (cornmeal) cooked with water to a porridge- or dough-like consistency. It is the most common staple starch of much of Eastern and Southern Africa:

Furaha, like his hat says, is a Bad Sponge:
